Code of Conduct


United Tech & Allied Workers is organising to improve the conditions of all tech workers. Founded on the principles of worker solidarity and empowering the underrepresented, we aim to reshape the tech industry for the good of everyone.

We recognise, represent and encourage all workers in the tech industry to join us - from developers and project managers to cleaners and warehouse workers, together we will improve our working conditions and change our industry for the better. This code of conduct outlines our expectations for all those who participate in our community, as well as the consequences for unacceptable behaviour.


Unacceptable behaviour from any community member will not be tolerated.

We expect all community participants to abide by this Code of Conduct in all community venues online and in-person, as well as in all one-on-one communications pertaining to community business.

This code of conduct and its related procedures also extends to unacceptable behaviour occurring outside the scope of community activities when such behaviour has the potential to adversely affect the safety and well-being of community members.

Expected Behaviour

  • Participate as best you can. Only through our collective action, building a community, and learning from one another will we be effective in our aims.
  • Respect others. Facilitate the participation of others, accommodate their preferences and observe their boundaries. When everyone is able to participate comfortably, we do our best work.
  • Act in good faith and assume good intentions from fellow members. Our interests and aims are aligned even if our current understanding might not be.
  • Collaboration before conflict. While there will be disagreement our collective exploitation and oppression will only be alleviated by organising together.
  • Receive and give feedback constructively and thoughtfully. It will be necessary to improve our organising efforts.
  • Practice good consent culture. Ask if you can engage with people and refrain from touching others without their permission.
  • Use the Discord discussion server effectively. Take advantage of channels and direct messages to make your posts and our Discord discussion server useful and relevant for everyone.
  • Be cognisant of what you share. While we attempt to operate the Discord discussion server as a tool for organising, and hold meetings in trusted locations, they are both still public spaces. For sensitive discussions we recommend private channels, direct messages, or smaller in person meetings
  • Be aware of conflicting interests. If you have responsibility for hiring, firing, raises or performance reviews in your workplace. Consider removing yourself from the Discord discussion server or forgoing meetings as your presence might deter others from organising, or put them at risk of victimisation.

Be mindful in the community. Alert moderators if you notice a dangerous situation, someone in distress, or violations of this Code of Conduct.

Unacceptable Behaviour

  • Inappropriate content. Posting or displaying sexually explicit or violent material on the Discord discussion server or at community events.
  • Doxing. Posting or threatening to post other people’s personally identifying information, including exposing a members participation in the community.
  • Inappropriate recording. Consent should be granted for photographing and filming members as well as including members details in meeting notes.
  • Disruption of events and tools. Preventing other members from participating in the Discord discussion server and community events. This includes trolling, misdirection, and abuse of resources and access.
  • Abuse, bullying or harassment, this includes:
    1. Deliberately intimidating or aggressive behaviour or language directed at another community member.
    2. Violence, threats of violence or violent language directed at another community member.
    3. Descrimination related to age, disability, gender reassignment, sexual orientation, race, religion or body shape.
    4. Deliberately not respecting a community member’s prefered gender pronouns.
    5. Personal insults.
    6. Stalking a community member online or in person.
    7. Unwelcome physical contact.
    8. Unwelcome sexual attention, including sexualised comments or jokes,inappropriate touching, and unwelcome sexual advances.
    9. Advocating for, or encouraging, any of the above behaviour.
    10. A new nested point.

Consequences For Unacceptable Behaviour

Most actions from moderators will be friendly reminders, however they will act on reports quickly and appropriately.

Anyone asked to stop unacceptable behaviour is expected to comply immediately.

If a community member engages in unacceptable behaviour, we may take any action deemed appropriate, up to and including a temporary ban or permanent expulsion from the community without warning.

Community organisers are available to help community members engage with local law enforcement or to otherwise help those experiencing unacceptable behaviour feel safe. In the context of in-person events, organisers will also provide escorts as desired by the person experiencing distress.

Addressing Grievances

Permanent resolutions, such as bans, may be appealed. To appeal a decision of the community organisers, contact with your case.
